Elissa Shaw, M.Ed, LCSW
About Sanctuary Psychotherapy
Sanctuary Psychotherapy is a space for healing, reflection, and growth. My mission is to provide therapy that supports individuals and couples in navigating life’s challenges with compassion and clarity. Located in Austin, TX, I offer both in-person and virtual sessions to meet you wherever you are.
Specialties & Expertise
I specialize in working with both individuals and couples, and with those experiencing the lasting effects of early relational wounds, highly sensitive persons, and individuals experiencing stress, burnout, or life transitions. My work also includes supporting clients navigating depression, anxiety, and relationship issues. In addition, I provide consultation for therapists and social workers who want to deepen their practice.
Therapeutic Approach
My approach is integrative and relational. I use a blend of approaches including Relational Life Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Parts Work while incorporating mindfulness, self-compassion, and somatic awareness with practical tools. This combination allows us to explore not only your thoughts and emotions but also the underlying patterns that may be keeping you from living fully.
Get To Know Me
Hi, I’m Elissa, and I’m so happy you’re here. I became a therapist because I am drawn to the stories that shape us and the meaning we make of our lives. I am dedicated to supporting people as they discover the narratives and understand the struggles that have influenced them, and I seek to create a safe, compassionate space where my clients can be seen and heard. Alongside my clinical training, I have training in yoga, dance and acting and bring mindfulness and somatic practices into my work with clients. I seek to witness each person’s unique experience and hold space for change to unfold. My aspiration is to help my clients uncover their strengths, heal old wounds, and find meaning and purpose in their lives.
The Experience Behind My Work
- Background & Education : I obtained my advanced clinical license in 2010 after graduating from UT Austin with an MSSW in 2006. Throughout my early career I worked in community mental health clinics, psychiatric hospitals, and schools before opening my private practice in 2016. I also hold an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from the University of Arizona and a BA in Anthropology and Environmental Studies. In addition, I’ve studied both Dance and Acting in college and beyond.
- Certifications: I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, in Texas and will soon be certified in Relational Life Therapy through the Relational Life Institute. To learn more about RLT, you can explore www.relationallife.com.
- Continuing Education: Through advanced training in attachment, parts work, experiential approaches, and mindfulness, I am able to infuse my practice with up-to-date knowledge.
